Andrew developed a malignant brain tumor in 1997. Surgery was performed and radiation treatment but the tumor recurred and became inoperable. He received a "gamma knife" surgery to kill 9 parts of his tumor but one portion was in an area too sensitive to treat with the "gamma knife." He was undergoing an experimental chemotherapy treatment in early 1999 which appeared hopeful. He went into a coma around Saturday, July 17 and died at home at 2 am on Sunday, July 25, 1999. He was cremated and his ashes spread in a garden at his church. There was no funeral but there was a memorial service on August 1 which he had planned prior to his death.
