Notes for Jimmie Haril Thornton
Jimmie first entered the United States Army from Eugene Oregon, and was processed thru Fort Lawton, Washington, for further assignment to Fort Campbell, Kentucky with Company I 503rd, 11th Airborne for regular training. Further Airborne Jump Training was done at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Fort Bragg North Carolina. After Jump training, he was assigned to the 187th RCT,
in South Korea. He made three combat jumps behind enemy lines and made his way back south after the mission was completed. Entered the Army 26 January 1951 and was discharged 18 January 1954 at Fort Devens, Ayer, Massachusetts as an E-5 Staff Sergeant. After a two year break of military service, he entered the United States Air Force on 20 January 1956. He was immediately re-assigned to Camp Edwards\ Otis Air Force Base on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. In October 1957, the same day the USSR put the Sputnik in orbit, he was enroute to the United Kingdom, RAF Station Wethersfield, Essex, near Braintree, approximately fifty miles from London. His tour of duty lasted four years, from October 1957 to October 1961. His next permanent assignment was Kirkland Air Force Base,
Albuquerque, New Mexico, from October 1961 to Feburary 1968. He was assigned to a medical unit in the Phillipines and further reassigned to Binh Thuy Air Base, Vietnam. From there he was assigned to Misawa Air Base, Japan, for one year and then to Hakata Air Station in southern Japan. The next major assignment was Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota from June 1972 to July 1976
at which time he retired from active service and switched to inactive reserves until receiving his final discharge for thirty years of military service in April 1983 with the rank of Master Sergeant E-7.
