Notes for Giles Webb
May have been spelled Gyles.577 Will written in 1709576 or 1711143 in Henrico County, VA. Colonial War soldier.576 He was a commander of a body of Rangers in Henrico County in October, 1692. He was active in the settlement of the French Hugenots in Manakin Town, Virginia, inspecting their living conditions, providing them with food, saddles, and furniture.
Also, he seems to have been responsible for much of the record-keeping for the settlement. He is mentioned frequently in the records of William Byrd I, who donated the land for the settlement and kept a close eye on their welfare. With Giles on his inspections were Rev. James Blair, Capt. Francis Epps, and Colonel William Randolph of "Turkey Island". This Giles Webb died in June, 1713. His will, recorded in Henrico County, mentions a brother, Thomas, and his step-son, Henry Randolph (Hugenot Emigrants to Virginia: Settlement at Manakin, Virginia, VA Hist. Soc., Gen. Pub. Co., 1973). However, it would seem that this is actually a reference to his step-son, Henry, and HIS brother, Thomas, the sons of Sarah by her marriage to Henry Randolph. Apparently, there were no children by the marriage of Giles and Sarah.
Efforts to place this Giles Webb in the family of our Giles Webb have not been successful as yet. Our Giles, died 1692, father of at least four Webb sons, was obviously not the same man.592
