Millie's daughter Susan Bird roomed with Joe's daughter Maxine in college. They conspired to get their single parents together and it worked.
17Here is a tribute to her:
1074Mildred was born July 4, 1908, in Elroy Wisconsin to Mahlon and Hattie Serns. She lived in the East until she met and married Raleigh Bird in 1925. They moved to Fresno, California, in a Model T in 1927 where Mildred returned to high school at Fresno Academy. She completed her studies and graduated from there in 1929 at age 21.
Raleigh and Mildred had two children, Susan in 1938 and Marshall in 1941. They were living in Calistoga when Mildred and Raleigh separated. Mildred and the children remained in Northern California where Mildred worked as a teacher for the Northern California Conference for ten years. By this time, the children were away from home in boarding school and Susan had a roommate named Maxine Larson. At this time, Maxine’s dad, Joseph, was single as her mother had passed away. Maxine introduced Mildred and Joseph and they were married in 1959. They lived happily in Chowchilla for many years, active in church and family events. Eventually, they moved to the Adventist retirement home in Yountville, California, where they celebrated their 31st anniversary. Joseph passed away in 1990 and Mildred eventually moved to St. Luke’s in Fortuna. She passed away January 30, 2001.
Two daughters, Nancy Buller and Maxine Center, as well as three sisters and one brother also preceded her in death. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Susan and George Whitchurch of Fortuna, Marshall Bird of Grass Valley, Gail and Irwin Walker of Brownsville, Don and Marge Larson of Vancouver, Washington, Rollo and Louanne Larson of Chowchilla and Phyllis “Nickie” Asgeirsson of San Diego. She also leaves 25 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren, and numerous other relatives.
She loved the Lord with all her heart. She is greatly missed!
