Carl Smith died falling into a hatch of the ship William S. Corey during World War I. Somewhat ironically, he had been taking a photograph and did not see where he was stepping.

Carl's middle name of Taylor is probably in remembrance of his grandmother Elizabeth Taylor, wife of Orrin A. Smith.613
