Curtis Blackwell Smith attended Castle Heights Military Academy, Morgan Park Military Academy, and graduated from high school while he was living with his grandfather in Orlando, Florida. He entered Great Lakes Naval Training Station in July of 1949 and went into aviation training at Memphis, Tennessee.
While in Memphis, he had an altercation with a man named Ellroy Union Barefield of 347 Union Street. Barefield, 53, claimed Curtis and he had met in a bar, had a drink together, then Barefield went home. He reported that Curtis knocked on his door at 1:30 a.m. Monday, May 29, asking to sleep in Barefield's apartment.
Barefield claimed Curtis struck him, then taking $3.00 in cash and a watch. Barefield took out a case knife and stabbed Curtis in the chest, neck and ear, killing him. He was arrested and charged with murder. Curtis was 19 years old. The results of this case are unknown at this time, but I will try to investigate.
