From "The Tacoma News Tribune" :
CAR UPSETS ON HIGHWAY NEAR CITY. Jack Clowers, 20 Meets Death, Five Others Are Injured When Machine Crashes Into Barricade. Machine Overturns In Mountain Road Accident. Death rode with a gay party of three young couples returning early Sunday morning from a chicken dinner reort on the Mount Tacoma Highway. In the wrecking of their automobile when it crashed at 40 miles an hour through the barricades where the highway is under repair about eight miles east of Tacoma, Jack Clowers, 20 years old, suffered the fracture of his skull and died on the way to the county hospital.
Other members of the party were badly shaken up and some injured in minor degree, all being treated at the County hospital, where they were taken by passing motorists. Dorothy Cohn, 18, residing at the Webster apartments, 629 St Helen's Ave, had her left leg cut. Edith Walley, 18, 4310 South Yakima Avenue, was bruised and shaken up and kept at the hospital until morning. Katherine Lindholm, 5901 South J Street, had her forearm sprained and also was kept at the hospital until mrning. Byron Furseth, 6015 South Puget Sound Ave, and Walter Achiesz were able to go home.
According to accounts given States Highway Patrolman Mike Wayne, the party was headed towards Tacoma about 2:15am when the accident happened. There was a sharp turn at the detour established around the repair work, but red lights were burning at the barricade. The detour was observed too late and the car at its high rate of speed, failed to make the turn and rolled over and over as it went through the barricade. The only wonder was that all were not killed, the officer reported.
Jack Clowers was the son of Mr and Mrs Charles Clowers, 4320 South 52nd St. He had been born and educated here. Surviving him are also a brother, Lowell, of Tacoma, and a sister, Norma Jones of Seattle.
