In 1990 when I visited him he showed me his father, mother, brother, sister,
her husband and their child who are buried side by side in the same cemetery.
He also told me his father was raised in Louisana coming to Rusk County with
his widowed mother and several brothers and sisters who he did not name.
He also said that his mothers real name was Mary Ellen which is the
name on the 1880 Rusk County Texas census.
During the war, he suffered wounds which caused him to have to have his
leg removed in later years, at the time of the operation he stayed under
on the operating table and as a result had some memory loss. As the years
passed he could remember quite clearly the past, but somewhat confused
as the order things happened in, or if they were things he remembered
happening to him or if it was a story his mother had told him. Trying to
separate the two was very hard for him. He got to where he was unable to
take care of himself and went to live in a nursing home in Nacogdoches
Texas.
