Mariah and William (I have a photograph of the couple) had 5 children from 1833-1842, all born in Sussex County, Delaware. They moved from Maryland to Fenton, Van Buren County, Iowa in 1849. Their eldest son, William died there in 1857. In Iowa, they hooked up with the Beckley family from Connecticut but more recently from Ohio. Daniel Beckley (born 1790 in Connecticut) left for Athens County, Ohio about 1814-15. In 1844, he moved the family to Van Buren County, Iowa where he sold the products of a local pottery to dealers. He moved to Montrose, Lee County, Iowa, then back to Van Buren County where he died in 1846. His wife, Sally Camp Beckley died the year before. The Beckley and Walton farms were adjoining in Van Buren County. So, it was convenient for the Beckley family to leave some of their members with the Walton family when they left for California in 1850. Lucius Ripley Beckley, son of Daniel, and his wife, Marie Ann Gorsline Beckley, and children crossed the plains with three ox teams, and some cows, joining a wagon train of 38 wagons and over 100 people.
