Notes for Matilda Josefina Hoaglund
Josephine's family name was originally Gustavson but when they emigrated to the US, the family chose Hoaglund because it “sounded less Swedish” is the story I was told.17

At the age of 65, Josephine got sick and was told she must be hospitalized. She wanted to go to Paradise Valley Sanitarium where her son Albert was the administrator. August Hemme and Joseph Larson didn’t want her to go there but Chester Webb decided that he was going to take her anyhow.

August and Joseph finally relented but they decreed that Chester couldn’t take young Fred along. Chester defied them and took Fred along. On the way back they were stopped at a service station or garage when an air raid siren went off and they had to seek cover (there were never any attacks on continental soil during WWII so it was just a drill).11

The California Death Index shows Josephine M Larson who was born 4/21/1877 and died 7/23/1942 in San Diego County. It lists her father’s last name as Holden and mother’s as Olson but everything fits except her parents’ last names.9 Oddly enough, in her marriage record there is a typo that lists her first name as Matilda and last name as Josephene.912

All sources of data are documented on the “Person Sheet” for each individual. My early data often came from less-than-reliable sources (e.g., “Sarah’s genealogy pages”). If the only sources for a person is something like that or worse there is no listed source for data, please take the information as only a suggestion and not a fact.
