Notes for James Booker Jr.
James Booker migrated from Gloucester Co. to Essex between 1747 and 1753. He gradually added to his holdings, naming his home "Laurel Grove". It may yet be standing near Miller's Tavern, at the end of a few last vestiges of an avenue of laurels.
His first wife, the mother of his children, is unknown. It has been assumed that her name was Elizabeth H. (perhaps Hubbard). His second wife was Mrs. Elizabeth Wright. Her maiden name was Sheppard; she, too, was from Petsworth Parish. The inventory of his estate included 20 slaves, 2 Bibles, 1 dictionary, the Universal Gazetteer and a parcel of old books (Essex Co. Will Book 15, p.101.)
