Notes for Roxie Gertrude Thornton
On the 1870 census of Carroll County Georgia, she appeared as Gertrude age 1 year old. In the 1880 census of Rusk Co. Texas she appears as Roxie age 11 years old. It is my guess that not liking her real name she was called by her nickname. While living with her brother James McClaus she caught some grease on fire and burned the house and also sustained burns on most of her body as is stated on her death certificate. She married late in life to a widower named Floyd White in the late 1920's and died not long afterward. She is buried in the Cove Springs cemetery on the north side of the children
of Minnie Fae and Hollis Harris. There was a small metal marker which I barely was able to read the writing on at the time I was at the cemetery, however I was assured by a son of Rufus Thornton that this was the grave of his Aunt Roxie. The location of her husband was not found. According to the family members she had the family bible in her possession at the time of the fire. It is not known if anyone else had a copy of the births and death page or not.
