Notes for Eliza Martha Jane Carlile
From a newspaper clipping of the Carthage Texas paper sometime in September 1931 the following article entitled ANOTHER PIONEER PASSES. Mrs. Martha Jane Trulock of Rusk County died Sept 26. She was 80 years old, came to Texas when 2 years old and lived in the same community seventy eight years. She had eight children, fifty nine grandchildren and forty-four great grandchildren.
She probably made the last homespun cloth in Texas. She grew the wool on her own sheep, spun the thread, wove the cloth and cut and made the clothes for the family with her own hands. J. D. Skinner
Carthage Texas. This was copied exactly as the clipping appeared when received from Nadine Webb, a Granddaughter of Martha Jane, however I feel that further explanation should be given so this is the facts as I have traced at this time. Eliza Martha Jane Carlile was born in Marietta Georgia in 1851 to Robert C. and Elizabeth Buckner Carlile. According to the bible record of the family given by Euell Carlile, grandson of Robert, Martha was the eldest child and his father second. While James was a baby and Martha two years old they came to Texas along with their parents and grandparents Eli Buckner and the rest of his family. They settled in near the county line and lived out their lives there. Eli and his wife are buried in the Bridges Cemetery and Robert and Elizabeth, are buried near Martha Jane, in the Waldrop Cemetery. Martha, her first husband Emanuel Truelock and his first wife Cynthia are buried together and share a common headstone with a wife on each side. Exactly where her second husband James Thornton is buried is not known however his descendants seems to think he is buried near his first wife Matilda Bridges Thornton. There was only one child born of the second marriage, Paul Frankland, my father. I have the original copy of this marriage license which was left in the courthouse in Rusk County. I also have a copy of her first marriage license to E. M. Truelock along with an application for a widows pension for civil war along with papers terminating this pension upon her death. Also I have a copy of a picture of her given to me by Beulah Truelock, wife of Murphy, son of Henry by Emmanuel's first marriage. Much of the information I have found has been as a result of information supplied by this kind lady. About all I know about my grandmother is taken from census records, court records, and documents which I have been able to copy. I would like to thank all the people who have contributed to my knowledge, as at the time of her death I was still a gleam in my father's eye.
