Notes for Frederick Spencer Hotchkiss Sr.
Left Connecticut and arrived in California on the schooner Velasco on January 24, 1849.
3366,3361 Owned sawmill that changed hands/names a number of times. In 1868 it was named Hotchkiss & Co. but in 1880 it was identified as HARTWELL, HOTCHKISS & STALKER, Sacramento Planing Mills, located on Front and Q. Member of Sacramento Society of California Pioneers. Moved to Sacramento in 1851.
806 Possibly unrelated, but the Society of California Pioneers lists a Henry A Hotchkiss who arrived in California on May 5, 1849 as well as a George W Hotchkiss who returned to Connecticut.
3374 These are likely close relatives of Frederick. The Sacramento Society of California Pioneers lists an F. S. Hotchkiss which I believe to be this Frederick Hotchkiss (I have circled his picture in the photograph).
3375 F. S. Hotchkiss was elected a member on October 26, 1866 and a director in the organization from 1896-1910 and F. Hotchkiss was president in 1902-3. F. S. Hotchkiss is listed as a senior member who arrived in July __, 1849. Anita C. Hotchkiss and Fred Hotchkiss are listed as junior members.
3376He and son George attempted to stake a claim in the Kondike but gave up after reaching Sheep Camp on the climb out of Dyea.
