2498. “GI Son To Camp For Discharge,” Montie and Veneata Ryals, The Fresno Bee, Fresno, CA, January 6, 1953, 1.
CHOWCHILLA, Madera Co.—Montie Ryals, 58, of Route 1, Box 874, and his wife, Veneta Laura, 50, did not finish the trip they began to Camp Stoneman with their son, Virgil, 24, a Korea War veteran, to receive his army discharge. Death intervened.
The highway patrol said their car, driven by the elder Ryals, went through an intersection stop sign at Highway 33 and Maze Boulevard, 14 miles west of Modesto yesterday into the path of a large truck loaded with automobiles.
Mrs. Ryals was killed instantly. Her husband died two hours later in the Tracy Hospital. Virgil Ryals, who returned from Korea only Saturday, is in the same hospital in serious condition with major injuries which include fractures of both legs.
Vilas Papendorf, the driver of the truck, was uninjured. His vehicle is registered to Truckaway, Incorporated, of Los Angeles and San Leandro.
Hospital attendants in Tracy said Ryals lived long enough to give information which led to early notification of other members of the family. Maurice E. Clay, a neighbor of the Ryals', took some of the children to Tracy after the accident. There are six other sons and daughters: Velous, a member of the Marine Corps, who is on a 30 day leave pending his expected transfer to Korea; Helen, who is employed and lives in Merced; Vivian, a twin of Velous; Donald and Mary Jo, students in the Fresno State College, and Melba Jean, a local high school student.
The family has lived in this district for more than 15 years. They operate a cotton farm two miles southeast of here. Funeral arrangements are incomplete.
