1851. “Police Kill Man After Woman Shot,” Frank E Smith, The Tennessean, Wendell Rawls Jr., Nashville, TN, August 6, 1970, 1.
A retired North Nashville insurance agent was killed by police last night as the officers attempted to serve a warrant for his arrest about an hour after he had allegedly shot his wife.
Metro homicide investigator Tom Cathey identified the man as Frank E. Smith, 70, of 1808 4th Ave., N. Cathey said the man was shot once in the right chest.
"I WAS on the floor of the bedroom and I looked up and saw Smith standing over me swinging the rifle over his head," Sgt. Edward A. Robertson, one of three officers dispatched to arrest Smith, said in a statement to investigators.
"I got off my knees and fired twice. He fell over me and dropped his rifle.
Cathey said Robertson and patrolmen Frank Crawford and Carl Gatley had answered a call about 7:40 p.m. from Mrs. Clara Josephine Smith, 56, who reported that her husband had shot at her.
