8729. “Obituaries,” Francis Anthony Avila.
Francis Anthony Avila died with his family at his side on March 29, 2014 in Modesto after a short illness. He was 83 years of age.
Francis was born on August 15, 1930 in Merced Falls, CA. He was the son of Frank C. Avila and Mary (Medeiros) Avila. He earned his high school diploma from Hughson High School in Hughson, CA in 1948, and then attended and graduated from Modesto Junior College. There he met the love of his life, Patricia. They wed in 1951, and for 63 years their union was inseparable.
For many years, Francis worked in installation and service for the heating and air conditioning business of Wayne R. Hampton. He later co-owned and operated Design Air in Modesto for over 20 years, providing residential and commercial heating and air conditioning services in the Stanislaus County area. He was past President of the Air Conditioning Trade Association (ACTA). He was an active parent at Central Catholic High School (CCHS), serving as past board member of CCHS and as a long time member of the CCHS Boosters Club. Francis was a lifelong, observant Catholic and a parishioner of St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Modesto. He was known for many passionate and well-developed interests which he pursued at great lengths, especially photography, genealogy, history, aviation, music, and the art of cuisine. As for the latter, his love of cooking and culinary expertise were family hallmarks. He was social, funny, ready for any adventure or to help others. All who experienced his company and friendship have many Francis Avila stories to tell. These frequently reveal a wickedly mischievous sense of humor that was uniquely his own.
Mostly, Francis will be remembered for his enduring love of family. His devotion to his wife Patricia was legendary, and throughout many life and health hardships, this only deepened. They were invariably described as being "joined at the hip," as a unit, or like being one person. He greatly loved his children and extended family, and their well-being was always a paramount concern to him. His life was all about family. From his pleasure in serving an artfully prepared meal to them, to his strong and steady presence during a family crisis, and up until his last moments on Earth, his love was truly palpable.
Francis is preceded in death by his parents and sister Elizabeth Field. He is survived by his beloved wife, Patricia, and children Francis Avila, Jr. and wife Candy, Philip Avilaand wife Geeta, Cynthia Schmidt and husband Jim, Vicki Campbell and husband Patrick, and Danny Avila. He leaves behind 11 grandchildren: Spencer Avila, Ishan Avila, Jyoti Avila, Brian Schmidt, Megan Schmidt, Garrett Schmidt, Jenna Barrale, Michael Barrale, Jaime Avila, Melissa Avila, and Daniel Avila, and 2 great-grandchildren: James Hood and Elliott Hood. He is also survived by his sister, Genevieve Peterschick of Hughson, CA, brother Dan Avila and wife Myrna of Lincoln, CA, and sister Vivian Chorley and husband Paul of Sacramento, CA, as well as numerous cousins, nephews, and nieces.
The family wishes to express its great appreciation to the nurses and doctors of Memorial Medical Center, whose exemplary skill and compassion in the care of Franciswill not be forgotten.

8747. “Obituaries,” Joy Oswell, Eureka Times-Standard, Eureka, CA, September 27, 2009.
Joy Oswell, born November 23,1920, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 16, 2009 with her family at her bedside.
Joy was born in the Los Angeles area and grew up in Pasadena where she enjoyed attending plays, movies, live musical performances and watching the Rose Parade in person every New Year’s Day. In addition, she was always an avid reader and loved drawing and painting. Joy attended UCLA and later business school. During World II she worked as a secretary in the Valley Hunt Club and had fun attending dances with her girlfriends to dance with American servicemen.
In late 1945 Joy met Clyde Oswell, a Captain in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and married him in 1946. They first moved to Florida where he was stationed, and after the birth of their first child, returned to California to be stationed in various cities. Clyde resumed his practice as a pharmacist after leaving the army, and in 1955 he and Joy moved the family, now including four children, to Ukiah where their fifth and last child was born.
During her first years in Ukiah, Joy was busy taking care of her family, participating in PTA and teaching Sunday School at the Presbyterian Church. Eventually she found time to become very involved with the League of Women Voters. She held many offices over the years including the office of president, and especially derived satisfaction from setting up Candidates’ Nights. Her participation in league continued for decades. To Joy it was a sin not to vote.
In the 1970’s Joy began working at the Ukiah Library that later became the Mendocino County Library. She loved working at the front desk where she had the opportunity to meet and talk with people. Even after she retired, she continued to work part-time and volunteer. She served on the Board of the Mendocino County Library and was very active with The Friends of the Library, particularly enjoying helping with used book sales to raise funds. During this time, she also pursued her personal interest in oil painting and took several painting classes. In addition, Joy cared for her husband, Clyde, who had had a stroke in 1976 that left him partially paralyzed and unable to speak clearly. After Clyde’s death in March of 1989, Joy continued her activities with the league and the library and volunteered to collate and mail a quarterly newsletter to Mendocino County retirees. However, by her mid-eighties, Joy was unable to continue her volunteer work for health reasons. In October of 2007, after spending fifty-two years in Ukiah, Joy moved to Eureka, CA and lived at Timber Ridge until her death.
Joy was dearly loved by her family and friends, and she gave her love unconditionally. She is survived by her son Robert Oswell of Arcata and his wife Mary; her daughter Celia Oswell of San Francisco; her daughter Ruth Coleman of Bandon Oregon, her husband Peter and grandchildren, Clifton, Galen, and Summer; her son David Oswell of Bozeman, Montana, his wife Laura and grandchildren, Matthew, Stephanie, Nathaniel, Susannah, Elisabeth, Joel and Josiah; her son Mark Oswell of Ukiah and granddaughter, Lesa. She is also survived by her special friend, Lil, at Timber Ridge.
The family would like to express their gratitude to Hospice of Humboldt and Timber Ridge for making it possible for Joy to come home to Timber Ridge after her stroke. A Celebration of Life will be held for Joy at Timber Ridge on Friday afternoon, October 2, 2009, at 2:00 p.m.

8748. “Obituaries,” Joy Oswell, Ukiah Daily Journal, Ukiah, CA, September 25, 2009.
Joy Oswell passed away peacefully at her home in Timber Ridge, in Eureka, CA, on September 16, 2009, due to complications from a recent stroke. She was nearly 2 months shy of 89. She was born on November 23, 1920.
Joy was adopted at birth. Her mother and father were from Belgium or Luxembourg, and her adoptive parents raised her in the Pasadena and Altadena areas. She lived there when there were still orange groves and dairy farms between the various cities and Los Angeles. Her adoptive father died when she was young, and her mother and stepfather, Ruth and William "Van" Van Arsdal, owned and operated board and care homes in the area.
Joy was raised around much older people, and had lots of affection and empathy toward elderly people at a young age. She attended business college in Pasadena, and had to attend classes in tents after the Long Beach earthquake nearly destroyed the college. Joy was a very adept secretary, and could type nearly 100 words per minute on an old Royal manual typewriter. She had her own version of shorthand that was only legible to her.
She met her future husband, Clyde, when she was a grade-school student, and he worked for her dad in his pharmacy as an apprentice. Clyde was 13 years older, went back to work in his parents oil fields in New Mexico, and married his first wife there. He divorced during the war while serving in the South Pacific, and dated Joy while on leave in California. They were married after the war ended, and Joy and Clyde lived across the US while he served in the Army Air Force, and then the Army Corps of Engineers. Clyde dusted off his pharmacy license, and he and Joy lived in various towns in California, finally settling in Ukiah in the early 50's. She raised 5 children in Ukiah while Clyde owned and operated Ukiah Rexall.
Joy was very active in the League of Women Voters, and worked at the City Library in the old Carnegie Library, then later in what is now the County Library, at the circulation desk. She was also very active in the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah, teaching Sunday school for many years, with Alice Oakley. She was an accomplished artist, and designed the program covers for the Colonial Tea for many years. She trained under Robert Comings at Mendocino College, and loved to do oil painting landscapes and portraits. Her granddaughter, Lesa, inherited her artistic talents.
Joy was predeceased by her husband, Clyde, in 1989. She is survived by her 5 children: Robert Oswell, Arcata, CA, Celia Oswell, San Francisco, CA, David Oswell, Bozeman, Montana, Ruth Coleman, Willits, CA, and Mark Oswell, Ukiah, CA. She is also survived by many beloved grandchildren, and step-granchildren.
Joy was a kind spirit who was very giving, and she will be sorely missed.
Rest in peace, Mom... we love you!
A celebration of her life will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah on West Perkins and Dora Street on Sunday, September 27th at 1:00 P.M.
Donations in her memory can be made to Hospice of Humboldt County or the First Presbyterian Church of Ukiah in lieu of flowers.
