Thelma Christiansen Couchman

November 1919 - July 2014

Thelma was born on a 40-acre farm on Carpenter and Grayson Roads to Frederik and Kirsten Christiansen, immigrants to the USA from Denmark and Norway respectively.  The fifth  of six children, Thelma attended the Danish Baptist Church of Modesto with her family where only Danish was spoken.
During the Depression, Thelma, her three brothers and two sisters worked hard.  Thelma's early chores included chopping wood for the cookstove and hoeing weeds in the fields of corn or beans.  By age ten, she was driving a sulky rake to put the dried alfalfa in windrows, shocking the hay, arranging the loose hay atop the wagon, and guiding the horse to lift the hay to the right spot in the barn. She also helped milk the 12-30 cows from age 12 through her years in junior college.

Thelma attended Jones Grammar School, Ceres High School, Modesto Junior College, and in 1940 graduated from Santa Barbara State College (which later became UCSB), where she earned a teaching credential. She then taught junior high for five years.

In 1945, she joined the American Red Cross, trained in Washington, D.C., and served as Recreation Director at St. Albans Naval Hospital in Queens on Long Island.  Later, drawn to religious work, Thelma enrolled at Baptist Missionary Training School in Chicago for one year of post-graduate work.  She was hired as Director of Christian Education in the First Baptist Church in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

Two years later, she was invited to travel with her father to Denmark and Norway where she ended up staying one year.  There she taught an English class and learned to spin and weave at the Norwegian Arts and Crafts School of Oslo.

In 1950 Thelma took a position as leader of the Baptist Girls' Guild at Camp Chinquapin near Pinecrest. Soon after, she met Hurley Couchman at the Modesto First Baptist Church where they were married in 1952. They made their home on the Couchman farm on Coffee Road where she painted the old farmhouse red to match the farm buildings she'd seen in Scandinavia.  There they raised four sons and two daughters.  Thelma served as 4-H Community Director; taught Sunday School at First Baptist and College Avenue Congregational Churches; was a member of the League of Women Voters, the Modesto Peace/Life Center, and the Stanislaus County Interfaith Committee for Latin America; served on the Community Action Commission that concentrated on local poverty during LBJ's administration; and was a member of the Stanislaus County Arts Council.   She and Hurley hosted exchange students through AFS, MJC, the American Farm Bureau, Heifer Project International, and others.  Hurley and Thelma together were fortunate to travel to countries in Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia.

Thelma is predeceased by her husband Hurley Couchman, their son Peter, parents Frederik Christiansen and Kirsten Ween Christiansen, brothers Carl and Arne and James Christiansen, and sister Hulda Christiansen, all of Modesto.  She is survived by sister Lillian Eaton of Galt and sisters-in-law Evelyn Christiansen of Modesto and Alma Deiparinae Christiansen of Turlock.  Her surviving children include Jonathan (Dorita Robinson) of Modesto, Sarah Dove (Duane) of Santa Rosa, Mark (Mona) of Sonoma, David (Mary) of Modesto, and Rebecca Harrison (David) of San Jose. Her grandchildren include Dayton Dove (Hannah Clilverd) of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dorothy Couchman of Modesto, Karin Dove of Davis, Erik Dove of Santa Rosa, Kirsten and Laura Couchman of Sonoma, Brian Couchman of San Luis Obispo, Michelle Couchman of Azusa, Bethany Couchman of San Luis Obispo, Katrina Harrison of Davis, and Clarissa Harrison of Royal Oak, MI. Two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Annabel, live in Edinburgh.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6, 3 PM, at the Modesto Church of the Brethren. Donations in her memory may be made to Modesto Church of the Brethren, Heifer.org, Friends of the Modesto Library (http://modestolibraryfriends.org/), the Modesto Peace/Life Center, or the McHenry Museum & Historical Society Acquisitions Fund. Please leave condolences at www.allenmortuary.com.

Hurley P. Couchman

Sep 5, 1919 - Feb 16, 2014

Hurley was born on land his parents homesteaded in Olene, Oregon and came to California at the age of five with his parents, older sisters, and older brother. They moved a dozen times between Stockton, Lathrop, Empire, Tracy, Valley Home, Banta, and Modesto while his father sought work in farming. Hurley graduated from Manteca High in 1938 and was always proud that he'd been admitted to start college studies at Cal-Berkeley, but he chose to stay home because his father, Orville, needed Hurley's help in supporting the family.

Hurley worked two years milking cows in Banta, CA at the Ceciliani Dairy, where he roomed in the bunkhouse and ate meals with the Cecilianis, was paid $40/month, and got only one day off a year. When he heard of 100 cows that had to be sold immediately after a bank had foreclosed on a local dairy, he quit his job, bought the herd, and moved it to a rented farm in Modesto on Coffee Road, just north of Sylvan School. His father Orville joined him in milking the herd, and in 1942 they bought their 100 acres with money borrowed from local farmer Dick Konynenburg. After the war, Hurley's older brother Homer joined the dairy, and together the three Couchmans leased farmland east and south along Coffee Road, reaching as far as Rose Avenue and all the way to where Memorial Hospital and Briggsmore were built. They were the last farmers to work the land under what is now McHenry Village.  The property had no water, but they still managed to harvest two crops of loose oat hay on it. They tore down the barn on that property and used the lumber to build their own milking barn on Coffee Road. Orville retired to Santa Cruz and sold his share of the farm, where Coffee Village was built in 1960, and Homer left to start his own dairy in 1964.

While courting his future wife, Thelma Christiansen, Hurley tried to impress her by stating that he "owned 100 mature cows." In their 62 years of marriage, they raised two daughters and four sons on the dairy. By the early 1970's, when Modesto had paved over the surrounding farmland, Hurley and family moved the herd west of Modesto. Twenty years ago Hurley and Thelma sold the dairy to sons David and Mark, and Couchman Farms continues to flourish under their ownership.

Awakened by the death of Martin Luther King, Jr. to issues of social justice, Hurley joined others in Modesto to march in support of the Civil Rights Act of 1968, protested the Vietnam War, and travelled to Nicaragua after the Iran-Contra affair as part of a fact-finding mission. He wrote many letters to Modesto Bee on issues of national concern that he considered important.

Hurley was proud to have served as an usher in church services for 72 years, starting at the First Baptist Church of Stockton, then in Modesto at First Baptist Church, Fairmont Avenue Baptist Church, College Avenue Congregational Church, and Modesto Church of the Brethren. He and Thelma began their long involvement with Heifer Project International when they donated a heifer to commemorate the life of their firstborn, Peter, who died in 1961. Hurley served on the Board of Directors of HPI and even accompanied a shipment of livestock on a cargo ship to Korea, mucking out the shipping containers during the Pacific crossing. He belonged to the Stanislaus County Farm Bureau, was a founding member of Modesto Milling, and became a STAR volunteer for the Stanislaus County Sheriff's Department. He served on the board of directors of the McHenry Museum & Historical Society, collected old farm implements for the McClure Country Home, and collated many a newsletter for the Modesto Peace/Life Center.

Hurley and Thelma travelled the world and always emphasized the importance of "getting into the homes" in Central America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and Australia. In Modesto, they hosted exchange students and visitors through the American Farm Bureau, AFS, HPI, Modesto Junior College, and other organizations.

Hurley is predeceased by son Peter, parents Orville P. and Lida Holloway Couchman, sisters Helen Barlogio and Gladys June Percival, and brother Homer Couchman. He is survived by his wife Thelma, and sisters-in-law Evelyn Christiansen of Modesto, Alma Deiparinae Christiansen of Turlock, and Lillian Eaton of Galt. His survivors include son Jonathan (Dorita Robinson) of Modesto, Sarah Dove (Duane) of Santa Rosa, Mark (Mona) of Sonoma, David (Mary) of Modesto, and Rebecca Harrison (David) of San Jose. His grandchildren include Dayton Dove (Hannah Clilverd) of Edinburgh, Scotland, Dorothy Couchman of Charlottesville, VA, Karin Dove of Davis, Erik Dove of Corvallis, OR, Kirsten and Laura Couchman of Sonoma, Brian Couchman of San Luis Obispo, Michelle Couchman of Azusa, Bethany Couchman of San Luis Obispo, Katrina Harrison of Davis, and Clarissa Harrison of Royal Oak, MI. Two great-grandchildren, Rowan and Annabel, live in Edinburgh. Hurley is survived also by eleven nieces: Milene Radford (Darrell) of Paso Robles, Karen Duke (Duane) and Lynne Willson (Irvine) of Lathrop, Nancy Hamilton (Bill) of San Andreas, Sharen Couchman and Janice Collyer (Steven) of Modesto, Carole Byers (Jack) of Danville, Arlene Webb (Fred) of Waterford, Christine Eaton (Dan Culhane) of San Luis Obispo, Rebecca Eaton of Galt, and Rachel Eaton (Rico Balatti) of Concord. He is also survived by six nephews: David Barlogio (Georgene) of Paso Robles, Jerald Couchman (Becky) and David Christiansen (Fran) and Jon Christiansen of Modesto, Michael Eaton (Charity Kenyon) of Galt, and Richard Eaton (Toni) of Carmichael.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Franklin and Downs Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held at 4PM on Saturday, March 1st, at Modesto Church of the Brethren. Hurley would have appreciated any donations in his memory to Heifer.org.
