10374. “WILL HOLD INQUEST TODAY,” Chris Dines, The Nebraska State Journal, Lincoln, NE, April 1, 1914, 5.
Coroner Matthews to Inquire Into Death of Dines.

Coroner Matthews said last night, after making an investigation following the death of Chris Dines In a coal hopper at the power plant of the Havelock shops, that he was convinced that Dines had had a fainting spell, or a stroke of some aliment before falling into the hopper. If he had not he could have prevented going down with the coal by the use of the long iron bar which he carried and which went down with him. An Inquest will be held today at Havelock, at which time other information may be gained. Dines was not covered by a great amount of coal and could have worked his way out, or at least kept above it, had he retained consciousness.
10375. “WORKMAN CRUSHED TO DEATH UNDER THIRTY TONS OF COAL,” Christ Dines, Lincoln Journal Star, Lincoln, NE, March 31, 1914, 2.
Christ Dines was crushed to death under the weight of thirty tons of coal in the boiler shops at Havelock shortly before noon today. The body was buried in the coal hopper of the automatic stoker. Dines was first missed at 11 o'clock. It was an hour later when fellow workmen had shoveled away tho coal and uncovered the body of the dead man. Dr. C. F. Ballard was rushed to the scene of the accident but the victim was beyond medical aid. The coroner's office was notified and Coroner Matthews is on the case this afternoon.

Dines had been employed In the shops for nearly a year. His duties were to operate the lever that fed the coal from the base of the automatic hopper. The coal Is elevated high in the air and is fed like a massive hopper. It is supposed that Dines had attempted to climb over the hopper for some reason and had fallen into the big chute. No ono heard his cries for help and his voice was soon drowned by tons of falling coal. What time the accident happened is not known. Dines was first missed shortly after 11 o'clock. The fear was Immediately spread among workmen that the man had met death by being crushed In the hopper.

Dines was thirty years old. He is survived by a wife and one child.

One of the workmen who saw the accident says that Dines was standing by the self loader and instead of climbing to the top when he wanted to go up, rode up on the coal carrier. He was carried rapidly to the top of the twenty-four foot tower and fell in, the coal load falling on top of him. The machinery was stopped in a few moments but by the time workmen had dug Dines out he was dead. The coroner is investigating.
