Fern F. Barton, 98, Barron, Wis., died Sunday, June 17, 2001, at Barron Medical Center - Extended Care Unit.
She was born April 6, 1903, at Sheffield, Ill., to Niles and Laura (Hackett) Fox. She moved with her family north of Turtle Lake in 1913 where they farmed for many years. She married Leo Barton Oct. 25, 1929. She worked at Clausen's Ben Franklin, Barron, as a sales clerk for 28 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church, Barron, and taught Sunday School in the Maple Grove Church before marriage.
Surviving are a son, Dene (Gerri) of Askov, Minn.; daughters, Shirley (Thomas) Pimple of Minong and Lois (Albert) Evans of LeHigh Acres, Fla.; a step-daughter, Ruby (Fred) Bauer of Minneapolis, Minn.; 12 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in February of 1939; her parents; brothers, Raymond and Roy Fox; sisters, Bessie Cornelius and Mildred Smith; a step-daughter, Eunice Lyons; and a granddaughter, Evans Becker.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Thursday, June 21, from the First Baptist Church, Rev. Harry Hoff officiating with burial at Maple Grove Cemetery, Town of Maple Grove, Barron County.
Visitation 3-6 p.m. and an hour prior to services at the church.

Owen Hall of the firm of Sharmota & Hall blacksmiths Barron was born on a farm in Marshall County Indiana Feb 10 1889 son of JF and Delia Denmann Hall natives respectively of Indiana and Ohio The family came to Barron County in 1894 settled on a farm in Maple Grove Township improved what was mostly wild land and remained here until 1916 two years after they sold out They then returned to Indiana where the mother died Feb 20 1915 and where the father is still living In their family were four children The oldest daughter is dead The second Maggie was born Nov 30 1883 and is now the wife of Maurice Kuhnly who farms at Brookton New York The other son Edward was born Nov 11 1893 and has a homestead in Montana After working on the home farm Owen Hall secured various employment until he learned the blacksmith's trade In 1910 he went to eastern Montana but two years later came back and again took up work on the home farm In 1914 he started farming in Stanfold Township this county but four years afterward again resumed his trade In 1918 he formed his present partnership with Fred Sharmota at Barron The firm does a general blacksmithing business wagon making and gas welding and enjoys a good trade Mr Hall was married June 8 1914 to Hattie Barton who was born in Maple Grove Township Jan 17 1894 daughter of William and Clara Watson Barton This union has resulted in three children Alice born March 19 1915 Marjorie born July 27 1916 and Herbert born July 21 1918 The family residence is in the City of Barron

Donald L. Broten, 69, Prairie Farm, Wis., passed away at the Osceola Medical Center on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2008, with family by his side.
He was born to Marjorie (Hall) and Lyle Broten at Barron on June 22, 1938. He was baptized and confirmed at United Lutheran Church, Prairie Farm. He graduated from Prairie Farm High School and WITC, Rice Lake.
Don married Carol Halvorson on Jan. 14, 1956, at West Akers Lutheran Church. He worked at many different jobs and strived to do the best he could at all of them. He and his sons repaired many cars and other vehicles throughout his life until he had to have a pacemaker and could no long work over running motors.
Don loved to trout fish, especially on the streams close to his home. He loved football, especially the Packers, and car racing with his favorite driver being Dale Earnhardt. In recent years he enjoyed watching his grandchildren's activities as well as helping others. His passion was keeping his lawn looking nice with his John Deere lawn mower.
Surviving in addition to Carol, his partner of 52 years, are his children, Kevin (Nancy Peterson) of New Richmond, Steve of Menomonie, Cheryl (Randy) Johnson of Star Prairie, Laurie (Kevin) Lien of Soxboro, Dawn (Tom) Wirth of Prairie Farm, Terri Broten of New Richmond, Mike (Kris) of Prairie Farm, Kris (George) Casey of New Richmond, Karl (Karla) of Prairie Farm and Susan Broten of New Richmond; 17 grandchildren; a great-grandchild and soon to be two more great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard (Jeanne) of White Bear Lake, Minn.; an uncle, Bill Hall of Dallas; an aunt, Alice Berg of Prairie Farm; mother-in-law, Viola Halvorson of Prairie Farm; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews, who he picked on whenever he had the chance as he did with everyone he met. He will be missed.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Marlene Glaser; an aunt and uncle; and a special grandmother, Hattie Hall, who passed away exactly 16 years prior to Donald on Jan. 13, 1992.
A private family burial followed by a celebration/memorial of Don's life for all relatives and friends will be held at a later date.

Paul J. Watson, 83, Gordon, Wis., died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2001, at Spooner Health System.
He was born Feb. 11, 1918, at Barron to Walter and Elley (Quackenbush) Watson. He grew up in the Hillsdale area before serving with the U.S. Army in north Africa, Sicily, and Italy during W.W.II.
After his discharge from the military, he lived a few years in Glendive, Mont. He later moved to Gordon where he tended bar at the Lookout Tavern. He also worked as a guide on local rivers, cut pulpwood, and was a union laborer in the construction industry.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching animals and birds. He loved to be around family and friends.
Surviving are stepsons, Larry (Joann) Kahl of Almena and George (Sandra) Kahl of Prairie Farm; a stepdaughter, Sheila (David) Eggen of Prairie Farm; 11 step-grandchildren; and 17 step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Ethel, Nov. 5, 1985, and his parents.
Services were held Friday, Dec. 28, from Brown Funeral Home, Solon Springs, Rev. Dennis Bergeson, Pastor of Our Savior's Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment at Gordon Memorial Cemetery with military honors accorded by Lockman-Jensen American Legion Post #499 of Gordon.
