436. “Obituaries,” Harold James Johnson, The Fresno Bee, Fresno, Fresno County, CA, June 8, 2014, A25.
Former California and Arkansas resident, Harold James Johnson, 95, died peacefully on November 24, 2013, at his longtime home in Payson, AZ. Harold, born June 4, 1918, is survived by Geneva Johnson, his loving wife of 52 years; daughters, Diane Layton, Sharon Medlicott, and Katy Johnson; grandsons, Dominic Johnson, Kirk Hansen, Erik Hansen, and Christian Hansen; five greatgrandchildren, Ava, Tate, Sophia Kirky, Hansen and Reef Johnson; and a sister, Martha Munday. Johnson's father, August, came from Norway by way of the Equator, where the ship was stuck and the rations low. August Johnson fell in love with America and worked hard to make Lancaster, CA home. Tragically, when Harold was 12-years old, his father died, leaving behind a young wife, Hilda, and three children.
During the economic hardship of the 1930's, Harold was sent to live with relatives at an early age and had myriad jobs, large and small. He worked on his uncle's chicken ranch, bailed hay, and mined gold. As a mid-teen, Johnson was off and running. He continued a series of interesting jobs, such as sanding floors, pumping gas, and mining gold and tungsten. During World War II, Harold applied his knowledge and self-taught engineering skills to the wartime shipbuilding business at Marinship in San Rafael and Sausalito, Ca.
Harold was General Foreman of ship launching that specialized in Mission Class 10,500 ton oil tankers. In 1944 Harold joined the U.S. Merchant Marines and as a ship's carpenter, traveled during wartime, delivering sorely-needed rations and supplies all over the world. When the war was over and he returned to civilian life, he became interested in hard rock water well drilling. He was a natural at hard rock drilling and had ingenious ways to access water from the hard granite rock of California.
He was often rebuffed by others by declaring water was in the fractures of hard rock formation underground, and drilling down through alluvial to hard rock granite, then drilling laterals would produce a reliable water source. This idea gave birth to Johnson Drilling Company in Fresno, Ca. While Johnson has since sold his company, the Johnson name remains. At age 55, Johnson retired on a 400-acre working cattle ranch in Huntsville, Ark. He loved this life and increased his herd to 100 cows.
After a few years, he downsized his beef herd and started a Grade A dairy. Eight years later, he sold his dairy cows and built two chicken/broiler houses and raised chickens for Tyson Co. During that time, he also started rebuilding his beloved cattle herd. At age 76, Johnson retired the second time to Payson, a small town in high-desert Arizona. Harold always kept himself busy with projects.
He decided to dig a cistern to catch the rainwater for irrigation from the house/garage roofs. So, with shovel and a steel bar, he began digging. A little over two years later, this cistern measured 26 feet deep and 10 feet in diameter. Harold Johnson, we miss your no-nonsense straight talking, honest and direct way of looking at life.

Mary M. Sherven July 5, 1928 Our much loved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to so many passed away peacefully at her home in Saskatoon on Monday, October 26th. Mary is survived by her children, son Dan (Terri) and their family, Nathan (Rhiannon), Rod (Jolene), Danny and Mitchell, son Michael (Sharon) and their family, Krista, Scott, Taylor and Garth, daughter Maureen (Walter) Smith and their family, Jamie, Riki and Kacy, son Bill (Shauna) and their family, Justin, Jennelle, Kaitlin and Meghan, son Scott (MJ) and their family, Erika, Alex and Rachel, son Gord (Donna) and their family, Ben, Michaela and Jenna; great grandchildren Kelsey, Adonica and Kaitlin; brothers Gordon (Kay) Hayes and Jack (Claire) Hayes, sisterin-law Maxine (Norm) Geirl and brothers-inlaw Jim and Bill Sherven and all of Mom's wonderful nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her husband Dr. G.R. Sherven, parents Dan and Margaret Hayes and sister-in-laws Donnie McNaulty and Lorraine Rodgers. Mary was born in 1928 in Moose Jaw; she attended grade school at Aiktow near Lake Diefenbaker and graduated from high school in Moose Jaw. She graduated as a registered nurse from Providence Hospital in 1950. As a young graduate she worked as a public health nurse in the Moose Jaw area. After her marriage to Dad she worked in the Gravelbourg, Kincaid and Mankota hospitals until her retirement in 1999. As a nurse Mom showed her compassion by caring for both patients and their families. Over the years friends and strangers alike would tell us how much Mom had helped them during hospitals stays. It made us proud. As the veterinary assistant Mom played an integral role in coordinating Dad's day which could see him in Coderre in the morning, Bateman at noon and possibly Glentworth or Fir Mountain later in the day. Mom earned the respect of many farmers/ ranchers as she worked with them. As an accomplished athlete herself, Mom passed on the love of sport to all of us. She valued the life lessons learned through sport. She encouraged competition, loyalty, and most of all to strive to maintain positive relationships. Mom was so proud of her Irish Heritage, and being Irish she treasured every friend and had a remarkable ability to keep them for life. Mom was fortunate enough to travel to Ireland with her brothers and cousin Murray to maintain our family ties. She has encouraged us to do the same. Although Mom accomplished a great deal in her life it was family that meant the most to her. Her most important role was that of a mother and grandmother. She was always there to share her wisdom with her 6 children, 21 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Our thanks to the Saskatoon Health Region for the wonderful care mom received and a special thank you to Agnes and Pat for their compassion. Words cannot express our families' gratitude to all of Mom's tremendous friends who stopped in, sent cards, phoned and continually let her know that she was loved. To those who spent time with Mom and shared in the care giving over the past year we say, One can only hope to earn these types of friends over a lifetime. We are so grateful for mother Mary. The Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2009 @ 2:00 pm at St. Albert's R.C. Church, Mankota. Internment at Rosedale Cemetery, Moose Jaw Memorial tributes in Mary's memory may be made to the Mankota and District Health Auxiliary.

September 14, 1932 – May 23, 2015
It is with profound sadness that I come to you with the news of Bill Sherven’s passing. Bill passed quietly in St. Mary’s Villa in the early hours of Saturday, May 23, 2015. Uncle Bill was born in Naicam, Saskatchewan on September 14, 1932 to Eric and Islay Sherven. He was the fifth of six children, composed of three boys and three girls. They lived in Lac Vert and had many adventures at Silver Beach, a resort his parents founded and operated. We heard many stories of the family band and Grandma’s beautiful voice. He told us how they would cross the lake on logs, and how Maxine would chase everyone with snakes. When Uncle Bill was about 16 year old, the family moved to LeRoy, where Grandpa Sherven built the theater. Uncle Bill operated the projectors for many years. He also managed the Credit Union in LeRoy for a number of years. He took two years off from the Credit Union to work on the boats for NTCL in the NWT. He then returned to Saskatchewan and continued in the Credit Union system in Kuroki for quite a few years. I know all of the nieces and nephews have many stories to tell about visiting Uncle Bill in Kuroki every summer. After he left Kuroki he went to Dorintosh to manage the Credit Union there for a short time until he retired to Tobin Lake, where he had a little cabin. After being in Tobin for about five years he moved to Nipawin. When his health started failing, he moved back to LeRoy to be closer to Maxine, and moved into the LeRose Lodge, where he stayed for about a year. His health continued to decline to the point where he was admitted to the St. Joseph's wing at St. Mary’s Villa, and was there for little more than a year before his passing. Uncle Bill was never married. His adventurous spirit and unpredictability would never allow him to be caught in convention. He is survived by his sister Maxine(Norman) Gierl, and a multitude of nieces and nephews who loved him very much. Uncle Bill may not have had a conventional family, but he had a knack of being everyone’s adopted uncle. Thus, there are many families out there who lost their uncle and friend. We will all miss his sense of humour, and his infectious spirit that made him the life of the party. He was predeceased by his parents Eric and Islay Sherven, brothers Dr. Garfield Sherven, James Sherven, and sisters Donelda McNaulty and Lorriane Rodgers.
