Donald R. Ross
August 19, 1940 - January 15, 2014
Donald Robert Ross unexpectedly passed away at the age of 73.
Born in Cook County, Illinois to the late Marie and Myron Ross. He married the love of his life Arline Ross; they would have been married 54 years in March. He obtained his Masters of Urban Planning in 1973. Don was employed as a Senior City Planner for the Town of Los Gatos and retired in 1996. Most recently, he was working for the City of Escalon as Planning Consultant. He was a member of the Modesto Kiwanis and served as its Secretary, as well as the Tuolumne River Woodworker Assoc. He loved people and believed in giving back to his community. Don was a Veteran of the United States Navy and retired as Master Chief Petty Officer in August, 2000. He was very proud of his service to his country.
He had a joy for trains, music, singing, woodworking, and traveling, his greatest joy was his children and grandchildren.
He had a positive outlook on life and lived life to the fullest. Always smiling and making you smile. You couldn't ask for a more loyal friend, amazing husband, dad and grandfather.
Don is survived by his wife, Arline Ross of Modesto, his children, Eileen Pastenieks, Ripon CA, Mike Ross (Eriel), Washington and Michelle Morris (Trey) of Roseville CA.
He was a loving and devoted grandfather to four grandchildren: Janelle Ayres (Christopher), Aviano Italy, Nick Pastenieks, Ripon, Matt Ross, Washington and Ethan Morris of Roseville.
The loss to our family is great but we know he is in a better place with his savior. A recent posting by his granddaughter, Janelle says it all and reflects what is in each of our hearts "Heaven received another beautiful angel yesterday. My grandpa was the most kind hearted and giving man I have ever known. His bright blue eyes and contagious smile would light up the darkest room. I can't believe that you are gone, I feel like I am in a bad dream. I wish I could just hear your laugh one more time. I'm going to miss all our car rides to the nail salon to get our pedicures together with grandma and listening to you talk about trains and how much you would love to take the train everyday if you could. Please come visit me in my dreams, I would love to hang out with you and maybe take a train ride together. See you on the other side of tracks Grandpa. I love you."
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to Deegan Funeral Chapel. An Open House in Celebration of Don's Life will be held: Saturday, January 25th, 2:00pm-5:00pm. Please contact family members for additional information.
In Lieu of flowers, the family requests donations may be made in his name to: Modesto Kiwanis Club, P.O. Box 1025, Modesto, CA 95353.
