Death of General Frank J. White

Gen. Frank J. White, died in this city on Sunday, August 29th. He was a nephew of William F. White, of Santa Cruz, and eldest son of the late Hon. James W. White, former Judge of the Superior Court of New York. He received a good education, and early in life gave evidence of literary ability, having contributed articles to several magazines. At the outbreak of the civil war in 1861, though only in his twentieth year, he was one of the first to respond to the call to arms. He joined the Tenth regiment of New York Volunteers, known as Col. McChesney’s Zouaves, and proceeding to the field, he took part in the battle of Bull Run, and was subsequently with Gen. Butler, who deemed him one of his best officers. In the Fall of 1861, he was transferred to the army of the Mississippi. Later he was Provost Marshall and Judge Advocate General in Central Missouri. In the Fall of 1862 he followed Butler, the guerrilla chief, for thirteen days, and routed his band. His commanders from the beginning to the close of the war were Generals Butler, Frement, Ord, Totten, Schofield and Grant. Toward the close of the war, General White received the brevet of Brigadier-General, and was offered a captaincy in the regular army by President Lincoln. Subsequently he came to California where he resided until his death, which was from heart disease and the the malarial fever he contracted during the war. General White was conspicuous for heroic courage and patriotic ardor.
