Police said an 18-year-old Issaquah man sustained serious injuries in a wrong-way crash along Interstate 5 in Everett during the June 23 evening commute.
The crash left a 54-year-old Everett man dead. State troopers identified the deceased driver as Eric M. Lans.
Police said Lans’ Mitsubishi sport utility vehicle left the northbound lanes south of 128th Street Southwest, drifted across the median and into the southbound lanes. Then, the vehicle sideswiped a Dodge SUV driven by the Issaquah man and crashed into another SUV.
Medics transported the Issaquah driver, Austin Abendroth, to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle to treat leg and pelvis injuries. Abendroth remained in serious condition in the intensive care unit June 24.
The accident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. The ensuing investigation and cleanup required police to shut down all southbound lanes for hours, causing massive traffic congestion.
Troopers said they do not know if alcohol or drug use on behalf of the deceased driver contributed to the crash. The accident remains under investigation.

Eric Lans, 54, of Everett, died in a car accident June 23 on I-5.
Wrong-way crash victim remembered as helpful, kind
By Rikki King, Herald Writer
EVERETT -- Eric Lans always stopped for others.
That's how his friends remembered him at a memorial service earlier this week.
Lans, 54, of Everett, was killed June 23 in a wrong-way crash on I-5, south of Everett. The crash shut down parts of the highway for hours as Washington State Patrol troopers gathered evidence.
The wreck remains under investigation. Lans' sport utility vehicle was headed north before it crossed the median and entered the southbound lanes.
The Snohomish County Medical Examiner's Office hasn't finished its investigation, but preliminary findings indicate a possible cardiac event or something similar, a spokesman said.
Another man, 18, was injured when his car was hit by Lans' vehicle. The man, of Issaquah, is recovering at a Seattle hospital. He was listed in satisfactory condition earlier this week.
The memorial for Lans was held at Mill Creek Foursquare Church.
About 75 people attended, said Brent Gilbertson, who knew Lans through church. Most who came were friends, because Lans' family lives primarily in Eastern Washington, Gilbertson said.
Gilbertson, 35, of Edmonds, said the service in Mill Creek was beautiful. A video played of Lans singing at a recent church event.
"It started off with worship," he said. "We played a couple of Eric's favorite songs. One of them was 'Amazing Grace.'"
Lans' friends took turns talking at the memorial, Gilbertson said. Everyone's memories shared a common thread.
"He was a very happy guy -- loving, caring, kind," Gilbertson said. "He always made time for people. He just was never in too much of a hurry, like so many of us are," he said.
Lans was a talented mechanic who always was volunteering to help people with car troubles, Gilbertson said.
He was known to stop people just to make sure they were OK.
Lans was deeply religious, Gilbertson said. He often shared his love of Jesus Christ with those around him.
"He walked this planet as just this man of God," Gilbertson said.
Another friend, Katie Johnson, 52, of Lynnwood, saw news coverage of the wreck on TV.
She said she's trying to get the images out of her head and remember Lans as she last saw him: smiling and joking. He was always working on somebody's car, she said. He loved to bring people into church.
"Eric was probably one of the nicest guys I ever met," she said. "He made everybody feel like they were the most important person in the room. He talked to you, and he lifted you up if you were feeling low. He had a way of just always making you feel, if you weren't feeling that good or that great, after you talked to him, you were feeling great."
Tracy McDonald said God used Lans in a major way for him.
A few years back, McDonald, 43, of Everett, was fresh out of prison. He was broken and looking for help, he said.
Lans would give him rides home from church, McDonald said. He helped him get a cellphone and a car. Lans also introduced him to pho, the Vietnamese noodle soup.
"(He) just always took me out and kept me accountable," McDonald said.
Lans never shunned anyone, McDonald said. He was constantly reaching out. He always wanted to please God.

I, Ruth Viola (Lenz) Kerbel, was born on October, 29th, 1924, in Park City, Montana to George and Ida Lenz. My family moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, in 1929 when I was five years old. My journey in The Missouri Synod Lutheran Church began with my baptism on November, 27th, 1924. It continued with my confirmation on April, 10th, 1938. On August 23rd, 1942, I married the love of my life, Bill Kerbel. Bill and I moved to a dairy farm and cattle ranch in Banner. In addition to caring for our dairy, we raised three children and spent many years fostering 4H members to succeed with their projects. I continued to be very active in serving my church, including teaching Sunday school. My service to my church lead me to join LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) in which I became an active member and served several years as Wyoming District President. After attending Immanuel Lutheran Church in Sheridan for over 45 years, Bill and I decided to become members of the mission congregation, Prince of Peace, in Buffalo in order to help the congregation grow.
After my husband Bill’s passing in 1989, I moved to Sheridan and thought it to be quite natural to rejoin my brothers and sisters in Christ at Immanuel Lutheran Church. I continued to serve the Lord by making numerous banners and serving on our Altar Guild, as well as continuing my work with LWML. I also loved my time working on the hospital auxiliary board at the hospital that embraced me until I took my heavenly flight. I am preceded in death by my husband Bill Kerbel, my parents George and Ida Lenz, and brothers Ralph and Howard Lenz. I am survived by my sister Helen Sembra, my three loving children and their families, Bill and Kathy Kerbel, Jim and Sue Kerbel, Phyllis and Jody Fournier. Children have always lit up my life and I was blessed with 8 grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren. I also have been blessed by countless local adopted grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, I request that memorials be made to Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Mission Projects, in care of Immanuel Lutheran Church. I would like to thank everyone who has loved me and enriched my life.
Ruth V. Kerbel, 87, of Sheridan, WY died Wednesday, August 29, 2012, in Memorial Hospital of Sheridan County.
Viewing will be 6:00pm until 8:00pm on Monday (Sept. 3rd) from Champion Ferries Funeral Home with funeral service at 10:00am on Tuesday from Immanuel Lutheran Church with Pastor Paul Cain officiating. Interment will be in Sheridan Municipal Cemetery. Arrangements are with Champion Ferries Funeral Home.
