HOMICIDE IN MEMPHIS--JAMES L.WEBB, of the well-known house of WEBB & RAWLINGS, Memphis, was killed in that city on Friday last by THOS. B. MYNATT, Deputy Sheriff of the County. At the Coroner's inquest, among other testimonies were the following; MR. M. GOLDBERGER, who keeps the millinery store in front of which the shooting took place, being sworn; "MR. WEBB passed by the corner; he told me he was going to sell a piece of property and wanted me to purchase it; I told him I was not able to buy it; soon after I saw MR. MYNATT talking with WEBB, they did not seem excited. Some ten or fifteen minutes later I heard MR. MYNATT say it is not so, MR. WEBB said it was so, and after back and forth, MR. MYNATT then struck MR. WEBB; Mr. WEBB tried to defend himself, stepping behind my showcase; MR. MYNATT followed him, I heard MR. WEBB say, 'you coward,' I then heard the report of the pistol and saw the man fall. MR. WEBB had no weapon in his hand." MR. MYNATT gave himself up to a police officer, who took him to jail.

"The fire could have gotten into the rest of the residence undetected or carbon monoxide could have been overwhelmed the family."
The fire originated in the attic and eventually spread to the second story of the home. Mike Eades told Lovett that he and his wife were downstairs when they heard an upstairs smoke detector going off. Mike Eades saw smoke upstairs, then opened a door that leads to the attic and saw flames.
The first firefighters to arrive on the scene saw flames coming through the roof at the back of the house. It took roughly 25 minutes to contain the fire. Using a newly acquired thermal imaging scanner, members of the College Grove Fire Department then were able to find "hot spots" or flare-ups that were between walls and in hard-to-reach places.
"That was the first time we’ve used the scanner on a big fire like this," Lovett said.
Investigators will determine how much, if any, of the structure can be salvaged. Lovett said the first story had smoke and water damage.
Originally the home of Williamson County pioneer Dr. William Smith Webb, the house was constructed just after the turn of the 19th century.
In 1811, Webb and his wife, Mildred, traveled to Tennessee from North Carolina, settling between Triune and College Grove on a large tract of land that had been given to Webb for service to the government as a surveyor.
Webb first built a two-story, double-log house where the couple lived with their 13 children. The house stayed in Webb's family until 1881 when it was bought by James M. Long.
The Long House was torn down in 1914 and another dwelling built over the old basement.
The cause of Sunday's fire has not yet been determined. Lovett said there are no indications of arson and that unless the homeowner's insurance company requests an investigation none would be done.
"We don't really have anything to go on this point as far as what caused the fire," Lovett said. "Mr. Eades speculated that it may have been an electrical problem. He said the roof had recently been repaired at the back of the house and thinks maybe a nail or something cut into a wire."
Susan Eades works for the Williamson County Schools system as a guidance counselor at Brentwood. High School. Anyone wishing to make donations to the Eades family may do so at Franklin National Bank, where a fund has been established.
