10266. “Obituaries,” Morten Jerry Davis, San Bernardino Sun, San Bernardino, CA, December 1, 2006.
JERRY DAVIS Morten Jerry Davis, born June 10, 1938, in Walla Walla, WA, died November 25, 2006, in Redlands, CA. A Loma Linda Medical Center chaplain for 34 years, principally as the chaplaincy program chairman, Jerry Davis participated in educating over 2,000 chaplains, now scattered all over the world. He also affili ated with the chaplaincy office at the Jerry Pettis Veteran's Hospital in Loma Linda for 20 years, supervised in the Marriage & Family Counseling Program at Loma Linda University's graduate school, and as associate professor in the division of religion. Jerry had lived in Walla Walla and Yakima, WA, Yucaipa and La Mesa, CA, before settling into a house with his mother's new husband, Ben Johnson, in Spring Valley. The new house spurred his life-long commitment to having a house of his own, manifested in t he skilled improvements he has made in the homes he ultimately established with his wife of 47 years, Sylvia. Jerry readily acknowledged the strength of Sylvia's academics that made him serious about education. In turn, he supported her completion of college and a master's degree after their marriage. For his education, Jerry attended San Diego Academy, where his milk delivery route brought in funds for tuition; he pursued a bachelor's degree at La Sierra College, a master's at Andrews University, then a doctorate of religion at Claremont School of Theology, CA. In Claremont he pastored the Claremont Seventh-day Adventist Church, and later became associate pastor at the LA White Memorial Church. He won a federal grant for a project in Watts that engaged students in summer employment before he and Sylvia moved to Redlands with their two sons, Mark, and Clark. It was here that he embarked on the career that was to influence so many lives in one-on-one ministry at the hospital. Still a highly sought after sp eaker, Chaplain Jerry made a distinctive impact on his audiences. A San Bernardino lawyer recalls his Loma Linda eighth grade graduation in the 70's when Jerry spoke to graduates expecting to change the world: "You won't be able to change a lot of things," Jerry said, "but one thing you can be in control of is your attitude." An active leader of youth in University Church in the 70's, he voluntarily faced the teens of that era. Now Boomers, they recall his impact: "He seemed so thoughtful, so in touch with what really mattered to us kids. That was a restless era, but when he talked, everybody really listened. He made religion relevant at a time when it was cool not to be into such values." Overseeing his youthful charges, Jerry staged a series of dramatic productions dealing with social and ethical issues, such as a Joan of Arc play and portions of Jesus Christ, Super Star. One participant recalls, "He cast me as Cromwell's daughter. I was shy and timid, and I know now he must have done this to draw me out. " Another of his players, now a drama professor, recalls, "He gave me lines to learn; I was scared nearly out of my skin, but he made me feel good about what I did." In the 80's, Jerry sponsored an ambitious and successful building program at Loma Linda Academy, and as recently as last month remained an overseer and promoter of a $10 million building project at Loma Linda University Church, where his listeners knew he would be cogent, prepared, and personally generous. A devoted father and grandfather, J erry liked nothing better than to philosophize and enjoy a boating adventure with his family. He was an adoring grandfather to Mark and wife Jan's two daughters, Lauren and Elli, arrived in 2001 and 2006. Three months before the birth of Clark and Cheryl's son, Jackson Patrick, in 2002, Clark's death of a congenital heart defect saddened the family. His courageous battle with cancer ended on November 25. A memorial service is scheduled at Loma Linda University Church at 7 p.m. on Saturday, December 2. T he family aligns with Jerry's commitment in requesting that gifts be made to the Loma Linda University building fund, which Jerry promoted because he believed it would enhance the ministry of the members who worship at the church he so long supported.
