George W. Hochstedler, P. S. R.
George W. Hochstedler was born in Berlin, Ohio, November 21, 1849, and passed away in Portland, Oregon, January 30, 1914. Initiated in Laurel Lodge No. 7, May 30, 1879. At the institution of the grand lodge of Oregon, November 8, 1881, he represented Laurel Lodge No. 7, and was present at every convention of the grand lodge until the time of his death. At the convention of the grand lodge, in 1885, he was elected grand chancellor and in 1891 Supreme Representative.
At the convention of 1912 the grand lodge ordered him presented with a grand lodge veteran’s jewel, he receiving the first one manufactured by the Supreme Lodge.
A touching incident, showing the bonds of fraternity which bind the old veteran members of the Oregon domain, occured at the 1912 convention of the grand lodge, when Ed. D. Curtis, P. G. C., and Geo. W. Hochstedler, P. S. R., arose in the grand lodge, approached the altar and, embracing each other, as the Greeks of other days, requested one of the other, in the presence of the Supreme Ruler of the Universe and the brethren assembled, that whoever should be taken away first, that the one remaining should perform the last rites at the final resting place. On Sunday, February 1, in the presence of the officers of the grand lodge and the brethren assembled, Brother Curtis fulfilled his promise made to his friend. As he placed upon the grave of the one he had loved the laurel wreath, the sun which had been obscured by the coulds cast its rays for a moment upon mother earth, as if giving Divine approval from on high to this act of brotherly devotion.
In the early days of Pythian Knighthood in Oregon, he gave his best energies to the upbuilding of our order. He endeavored to lead a life modeled after our Grecian heroes, as taught by the Knights of Pythias.
