Notes for Sophia Rogers
Since Joseph Webb was her second husband, Harding could be a maiden name or more likely the name she had from her first marriage. A Sophia Harding is listed in the 1870 census of Sumner County as the head of household with Denia Harding, Sarah F Harding, and William Harding. William is only five years old and could be her son. The two girls are aged 22 and 26 respectively.4403
The census record for 1880 is odd. It lists her husband as Robert Webb rather than Joseph Webb, has her listed as 41 years old (estimated birth abt 1839) and Robert at 32 (estimated birth abt 1848). That’s three years too old for the husband and 5 years too young for the mother but agrees with the age of the Sophia Harding from the 1870 census. There is also a son listed as Thos Jeff Webb that is 16. If the other ages were correct, he would have been born when Joseph Robert Webb was 16. I would assume this is a different family, but they are living adjacent to the George Harden family, of which two children married into the Webb family. Her name being listed as Sophia Harding suggests to me that she might have been an older sister or, if the age in this census is correct, possibly even mother, of George Harden.227
Robert Harden relates that Sophia Rogers married first Robert Harden (listed as Jesse Harden on George Thomas Harden’s death certificate) who died in Camp Douglas of smallpox, and then she married Joseph Robert Webb.4910
