Della's father, Walter August Hemme, was having colon surgery to restore his colostomy to natural function again. He had cancer of the Colon. He was at the White Memorial Hospital so was not present for the wedding. Alma came back to Chowchilla from the White for the wedding. Leeta and Thelma, her sisters, were the bridesmaids and 2 service men from the Merced Air Base (later to become Castle Air Base) were the male attendants. Fred was in the Army air corps. Fred was visiting different churches in the area while stationed in Merced and was in the Chowchilla Church on a Sabbath when Della happened to be home from teaching in Fresno. Fred was carrying a Bible which put him up a step or two in Della's mind. He was seated with Lloyd Leer in the row ahead of Della in Sabbath School. Over the next few weeks, they met on several occasions in Sabbath School and one week, Della asked him if he would like to come for Sabbath Dinner. He said that he had already been invited but that supper was coming. That was the beginning of a lifelong relationship.
They first met in December of 1942 and were married in August of 1943.
The actual courtship was about 3 months.
