Notes for Jerome Gerard Abruscato
I do not recall the source of the following information. It is not original with me:
Jerome had a hard exterior but would help anyone who asked. Worked as anelectrician and later as an electrical engineer. Served in Signal Corpsduring WW2, duty with 52d Signal Bn, 52d Supply and Support. Since all of his friends were in the service he enlisted on 7 Oct, 42. Trained andserved at Camp Crowder, MO where he met Hazel Ione. Shipped out to SouthPacific (Asiatic-Pacific Theater) on 1 Apr, 44 where he served until thewar was over.
He was offered an officership to stay in the service as part of theoccupation forces of Japan, but he declined the offer. He missed histransport date twice because he went back to the "bush". When hereported back to his company he was put under house arrest until heboarded ship for the states. He was escorted onboard the ship 29 Nov,45, docked at San Pedro and separated 23 Dec, 45 at Ft. McArthur, CA.Decorations and Awards: American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-PacificCampaign Medal, Phillipine Liberation Ribbon w/ 1 Bronze Star, WW2Victory Medal. Time lost (AWOL) 96 days.
At the end of WW2 personnel were demobilized at the last permanent rank.In order to attain permanent rank a person must have held the rank for atleast 1 year. As your grandfather went up and down in rank (somewhatlike a yo-yo), he never held any rank for long. After serving his badtime as a private he would be automatically promoted to corporal. Hisusual punishment was to rake up cigarette butts from under the barracks. What he would do was take a magazine or book with him and if he heardsomeone coming he would start raking.
One time, after he was married, he was feeling bad about not getting tosee your grandmother. His sergeant told him that if he was feeling so badhe should go to town for a week and see his new wife (the sergeant wasbeing snotty). When the week was up your grandfather returned to base. The first person he saw was his sergeant who asked him where he had been.Your grandfather acted like a dumb private and said he had gone to seehis wife. If the company commander reported Jerry as AWOL the sergeantwould get in trouble so no charges were levied.
After Hazel died, Jerry married Grace Wynn of San Luis Obispo, CA on9-24-83. He was active in the church; he and Grace enjoyed travelingocccasionally. They were married for 10 years when he passed away.
Going back in time, we find Jerry as a teenager in Brooklyn's "LittleItaly". After his mother died Jerry went to live in an orphanage. Onebrother could not afford to raise him, and the other brother did not wanta boy who missed his mother. Jerry grew up on the streets where he waspart of a gang. This gang should not be likened to to the gangs of the1990s. For fun the Italians would join with the Germans to fight theIrish and the Jews. The losers had to treat the winners to ice cream. The next week the Irish and the Italians might fight the Germans and thePolish. During these "parties" only fists were allowed, and gangs usingknives, chains or bats were looked down on (at that time use of guns wasunheard of).
Gerolomo is the Italian for Jerome.
