Mable was born December 12, 1901 in Oberlin, Kansas to John Oscar and Josephine Larson. About a year later, the family converted from their Swedish traditional religion of Lutheran to Seventh-day Adventist. This caused a great deal of conflict within the family and caused Oscar to look about for a secure place to raise his family where his children could have an Adventist education. At campmeeting they heard that there was an SDA school in Escondido, CA, and went to investigate. He liked it and in 1903 moved his growing family to Escondido.
By 1914, Oscar realized he needed more occupation for his growing boys and learned of cheap fertile land in Chowchilla, CA. After investigation he moved his family to Chowchilla in 1914. Mable finished 5th grade in Escondido before the move. That year, Oscar was instrumental in establishing a Seventh-day Adventist church and school in Chowchilla. He also established a Sunday School for the local non-SDA farmers which eventually developed into the Bethel Baptist Church.
Aaron, Albert, Maude, and Mable all went to Lodi Academy. Aaron went on to PUC and took theology. Albert apprenticed himself at St. Helena Sanitarium and eventually became a respected hospital administrator for the SDA Church. Maude married Jake Eberhardt and raised a large family. Mable took nurses training at St. Helena Sanitarium and graduated in 1925.
Mable was asked to go to Sacramento to help establish a medical work there. The project never prospered and she returned to Chowchilla. She was living at home but was not on site when Oscar was injured while working on the farm. It is reported that Oscar and Joseph were unloading some posts. Joseph went to the house to get a drink of water and upon his return, his father was on the ground unconscious. He attempted to revive his father but was unable. Mable came home and did all she could but Oscar was dead.
Mable sought work at Mercy Hospital in Merced where she eventually met Chester Lee Webb. Lee's sister, Frances, was hospitalized and when Lee visited he met Mable. Later, when Lee was hospitalized, he again met Mable and asked for a date. After agreeing that Elvira “Smithie” Smith and Max Webb would accompany them, Mable accepted. They went to the snow in Cathay Valley.
Mable refused more attention from Lee as he smoked, drank and did other things that SDA's do not approve of. Lee contacted the pastor of the SDA church in Merced and took Bible studies to see what made Mable so sweet. He believed and after giving up his life-long habits, was baptized as an SDA. Soon after on July 30, 1930, at 10:30 am, the two were married. It was Lee's 30th birthday.
The new family did quite well at first as both had good jobs. Lee lost his job because he refused to work on Saturdays. Mable invested some of her money in a chicken ranch which Lee operated. When the depression hit, they could no longer sell the eggs at a price which paid for the feed of the chickens. They lost the chicken ranch. their first-born, Jack Eugene, was born January 11, 1932, causing greater financial stress. In late 1932, they had to give up their home in Merced and move to Chowchilla to live with Josephine, Mable's mother. Verda Belle was born April 19, 1933, and Lynn Oscar was born November 29, 1935.
The depression being over, Lee had found work and they were able to rent a place in Dairyland by the railroad tracks. In 1940, they found 80 Acres of virgin land at what is now the intersection of Avenue 19 and Road 9. They moved there in November 1940. Lee had a dairy and raised crops to support his growing family. Fred Lee was born March 9, 1941.
World War II caused financial hardship again but they were able to hang on to their farm and educate their children.
