Tried to homestead in Elida, Roosevelt County, NM when they moved to Roswell, Chaves County, NM. However, they never lived on the property they were intending to homestead. Instead, they would periodically have their boys (including Chester who was only 6 years old when they moved to Roswell and 12 when they moved to Canada) ride the 150 miles from Roswell to Elida to check on things. They left the cabin table set so if someone happened to stop by it would look as though they would be returning for supper. It is unknown if they were caught or if they finally gave up on the idea of homesteading in Elida.
17Although Chester Lee Webb did not get along with his father, his parents elected to come live with him in their old age.
17CA death records show a J S Webb died January 17, 1932 at the age of 69 in San Joaquin county.
9 This record closely matches but not exactly matches (Lynn Webb has his funeral on January 16 and my baby book has his age at death as 68).
The Webb farm in Riverhurst, Saskatchewan was a favorite place for young relatives to visit on holidays. Jean Gibson writes, “The children liked to visit the farm on holidays. I realize now that Aunt Belle had a good knowledge of child psychology. She always made us feel important by giving us tasks, even to picking goose-berries. On the farm we enjoyed riding an old retired circus horse. Dick was a beautiful white horse who would at a certain command put his head down and dismount his rider with a slide down the neck.”
