Obituary-Leo R. Griffing

Former Onaga resident, Leo R. Griffing, 76, died January 24, 1992, at Yuma Regional Medical Center, Arizona.

Memorial services were conducted by his children and friends at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 25, 1992, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Yuma.

A native of Morrowville, Kansas, he was born June 30, 1915. He received his undergraduate and advanced degrees from Kansas State University. He was a teacher and an educational administrator for 45 years,, from 1933 to 1978, and lived and taught in Washington County, Randolph, Frankfort, Westmoreland, Cleburne, Circleville, Onaga, and Fowler, Kansas. Between 1966 and 1980 he was an education consultant with the State Department of Education in Topeka. He was also active in sports in Northeast Kansas as a coach and referee.

He was a member of Lodge #20 AF&AM in Circleville and earned his 32nd Degree from the Topeka Consistory Scottish Rite in 1949. He also was a member of Circleville Chapter #293 Order of Eastern Star, National Education Association, Association of Secondary Principals, Phil Delta Kappa Educational Fraternity and the Highland Park United Methodist Church in Topeka.

He was married to Ethel Evelyn Avery on December 27, 194l. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Darryl Griffing, Yuma, Ariz., A.C. Griffing, San Francisco, Calif.; and Brad Griffing, Wakefield, R.I.; two daughters, Gwen Eidman, Emporia, Ks.; ad Lois Griffing of Chicago, Ill.; and seven grandchildren.

L. Griffing's Brother-in-Law Dies in Tennessee

Mr. Bernie Turner, 55, of Lyles, Tenn. passed away unexpectedly last Wednesday in a Nashville, Tenn. hospital of acute leukemia. Mr. Turner was a brother-in-law of Mr. Leo R. Griffing, Onaga Grade School principal.

Funeral services were held Friday in Centerville, Tenn. with burial at Cullman, Ala., Mr. Turner's birthplace.

Survivors include his wife, Alma, of the home; three sons, Don, Jerry and Marshall Turner, and five grandchildren.

Mr. Griffing accompanied other relatives to Tenn. last Wednesday, and returned home Sunday.

Griffing's Brother-in-law Dies at Omaha, Nebr.

Mr. Leo Griffing, Principal of Onaga Saturday of the death of his brother-in-law, Mr. Howard Taylor, 63, of Omaha, Nebr. Mr. Taylor was fatally stricken Saturday morning at his home.

Mr. Griffing spent the week end in Omaha to be with his sister and other members of the family, and attended services for Mr. Taylor on Monday afternoon at Union, Nebr. Burial was in the Union cemetery.

MESA, Ariz. -- Ethel Griffing, 91, Mesa, formerly of Wakefield, Kan., died Aug. 8, 2007.
Mrs. Griffing was born on March 7, 1916.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, in 1992.
Survivors include three sons, Darryl of Mesa, Ariz.,A.C. of Walnut Creek, Calif., and Brad of Coventry, R.I.; two daughters, Gwen Eidman of Emporia, Kan., and Lois Griffing of South Orange, N.J.; a brother, Albion Avery of Leonardville, Kan.; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, inWakefield. Inurnment will be in Wakefield Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Wakefield Museum Association, in care of Neill-Schwensen-Rook Funeral Home, 918 Seventh, Clay Center, KS 67432.
There will be no visitation.

MRS EVA SJOLANDER
Mrs. Eva A Sjolander, a long time resident of Scandia, passed away Saturday, December 20th at the Belle View Manor, Belleview, at the age of 94 years, 2 months and 25 days.
Immediate survivors are her daughter Fern Kellogg of Gaylord, Kansas and her three sons, Charlie and Alvin of Scandia and Eustice of Concordia.
Funeral will be 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, December 23rd at the Scandia United Methodist the Reverend Charles Dizon officiating.
Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery.

Berthoud Resident Dies at Hospital

Henry Hagel Sr., 70, resident of Berthoud since 1937, died at the county hospital Sunday morning, after a long illness.

Born Aug. 8, 1880, at Straub, Russia, Mr. Hagel came to the United States in July, 1904, settling at Lincoln, Neb. He lived there until 1912, when he moved at Atkinson, Neb. After moving to Berthoud he farmed for a time, but his main occupations were carpentry and tanning.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Hagel; nine children, Henry Hagel and Mrs. Elizabeth Giebelhaus of Berthoud; Alexander and John Hagel of Santa Rosa, Calif.; Herman and Carl of San Mateo, Calif.; Adam Hagel of San Francisco, Mrs. Marie Schwab of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Lydia Grothe of Emmet, Neb.; one sister, Mrs. Lena Kraft of Lincoln, Neb.; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Brethren church in Berthoud. Burial will be at Greenlawn cemetery.
The Schreiner mortuary is in charge.

Mrs. Ann E. Hagel Dies This Morning

Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Hagel of Berthoud died this morning at the Loveland Memorial hospital.

She was born Sept. 10, 1882, at Norka, Russia, to Jacob and Elizabeth Sterkel. She came to the United States 65 years ago and had lived in the Berthoud area the past 31 years. She was married to Henry Hagel in Russia in February, 1901.

She was a member of the First Congregational church of Loveland.

Survivors include six sons, Henry Hagel of Berthoud, Adam Hagel of Loveland, Alexander Hagel of Santa Rosa, Calif., John Hagel of Lemon Valley, Nev., Herman Hagel of State Line, Nev., and Fred Hagel of San Mateo, Calif.; three daughters, Mrs. Fred (Marie) Schwab of Syracuse, Neb., Mrs. William (Lydia) Grothe of Emmett, Neb. and Mrs. Albert (Elizabeth) Giebelhouse of Longmont. There are 11 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. George Nolde of Loveland and Mrs. Elizabeth Kahler of Lincoln, Neb.

Services will be announced by Berthoud Funeral home.
