Shirley Jean Scott, 86, of Rapid City, S.D. and formerly of Lincoln, passed away on August 28, 2010 at her daughter's home in Rapid City. Shirley was born May 4, 1924 on the family farm in the Martell, Neb. area to Frank J. Young and Grace M. (Allder) Young. After her childhood on the farm, she moved to Lincoln. She worked at a cafe as a waitress for Val & Alice Weiler. This is where she would meet her husband, Henry J. "Scotty" Scott of Salem, Ala. While her daughter was in grade school, she was a homemaker, caregiver, Camp Fire Girls Leader, and a devoted supporter of her daughter's activities. After her daughter entered Junior High School, she became a baker at Robin Mickle Junior H.S. She later became the baker at Lincoln Lutheran School. Over the years, Shirley was well known for her baking skills especially her cinnamon rolls. She was always happy to make them for family, friends, and neighbors and even made dozens for her husband's Post Office co-workers at Christmas time. Shirley became known as the "roll lady". She remained in Lincoln until she and her husband moved to Rapid City in 2005 to be closer to her daughter.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Krause and son-in-law, Kelly Krause; Rapid City; granddaughter, Melissa Krause and grandson, Eric Krause, both of Rapid City; nephew, Garey Young of Lincoln; nieces, Theresa Rogers of Jacksonville, Fla. and Donna Scott of Atlanta, Ga.; and also by many great & great-great nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, William Young; sister, Lucille Moody and nephew, Rodney Young.

Shirley wished to be cremated and requested a private inurnment at Pine Lawn Memorial Park in Rapid City, S.D., where her late husband rests. With her upbringing on the farm, she always had a love of animals. Throughout the years, she adopted stray dogs & cats, took in the abused, and even cared for pets when their owners were stationed overseas. Therefore, because of this love and her beloved "grand-dog", Halo, she asked that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Humane Society of the Black Hills, 1820 E. St. Patrick St., Rapid City, SD 57703. Arrangements are with Kirk Funeral Home in Rapid City, S.D. Online condolences may be sent to

Parsons, Daniel Alonzo (1879-1954). Pastor and church administrator. Parsons served as a missionary in England and Ireland (1901-1907), and then as a pastor in various conferences before becoming president of the Utah Conference (1910-1912). In 1906 he married Annie Howell (1884-1949). In 1909 and 1910 Ellen White encouraged Parsons in his work in North Carolina (Letter 62, 1909) and urged him to work for the spiritual revival of church members, pastors, and physicians (Letter 42, 1910). In 1986 an unfounded rumor about Ellen White predicting a massive earthquake in California erroneously cited Parsons as a witness. The article debunking the rumor also contains biographical details about Parsons (Nix).Further reading: obit. RH, Dec. 30, 1954; J. R. Nix, “The Unrecorded Earthquake Vision,” AR, June 19, 1986.
