Judge Shields yesterday granted Freda Sturm an Interlocutory decree of divorce from Ludwig Sturm, who is in jail pending his approaching trial, held for lack of $20,000 bail. Sturm is accused of maltreating his young stepdaughter. [Based on the November 10 article, this would be Ona, although this is the only place I have ever seen her referred to as a stepdaughter rather than natural daughter.]

Frederick Sturm, charged with misconduct with his step-daughter, a girl under 14 years of age, and who was indicted by the grand jury, yesterday appeared before Judge Hughes and withdrew his former plea of not guilty and entered one of guilty.

Sturm took sentence without delay. It was for life in the Folsom prison, but the commitment was withheld and the sheriff was directed to escort Sturm to the first town north of the California line. Sturm was informed by the court that if, after leaving California, he ever again set foot in the state, the commitment would issue and he would begin to serve the life sentence pronounced against him.
